Growing Sangiovese since 1993

Growing Sangiovese since 1993

In the late 70s an opportunity to plant grapes was presented to us by the late Peter Brown. As it is in our nature to take a risk, in 1978 we planted our first Riesling vineyard. In 1994 we produced our first wine – a Chardonnay - under the Pizzini label. From there, our passion for Italian varieties led us to plant and nurture Italian grape varietals including Sangiovese, which we have been growing in our vineyards now for over 30 years.

40 years of grape growing and 30 years of winemaking has allowed us to gain a complete understanding of both current and potential vineyard sites on our King Valley property. We have studied soil type, aspects, row orientation, rootstock attributes and clone suitability and have made improvements to vineyard practices over recent years with the benefit of having this knowledge. We have also developed new vineyards which will allow us to produce superior Sangiovese fruit quality on a consistent basis.

In the vineyard we focus on increasing vine health through considered soil and flora management, and the use of filtered light through the canopy so as to enhance grape maturity and flavour.

This information and understanding and appreciating the wine style that each particular vineyard can naturally produce has enabled us to develop our own classification system for our Sangiovese vineyards. We used this system to introduce our Sangiovese Series, which now includes six different wines, all made using Sangiovese grapes.

Each of these wines in many ways is a reflection of the sites or site on which the fruit is grown.
